Public Holidays:
The school will be closed for recess for the month of august.

Work Attachment:
All students will be placed in a work detachment for three months in other saloons. After this period they will be able to sit their final exams. If a student were to fail the exam he/she will need to re-sit the exam to secure their certificate and satisfy their future employer.

Certifications:
Certificates can only be awarded to students that have succesfully completed the full course including the work detachment and exam. If a student leaves the course before completion no certificate will be issued.

Learning About Weaves

Thinking about getting a weave? Do you know which kind you want? Do you know the difference between bonding and fusion, or a sew in and a Malaysian? What hair will you use? Is it human or synthetic?

Weaving Techniques

Choosing the right weaving technique is very crucial. There are many different techniques and the one you decide to use should be based on how you want to wear your hair. Also, each technique has a different price tag ranging from around D600 for bonding to around D1200 for a fusion. Along with choosing the technique that best fits the hair style you are going for, you should pick the technique that fits into your budget. Here are a few of the most popular weave techniques being used and the "pros" and "cons" of getting each done.

Bonding (lasts 1 to 2 weeks)

Bonding is the easiest, least expensive, type of weave you can get. It is so easy that many people do this techniques themselves in their home. The tracks are glued on to the hair(just below scalp) with a synthetic glue. This technique is best if you want to make your natural hair look thicker, and/or longer without the use of braids.

Pros: Quick and easy. Doesn't cost much. Looks very natural

Cons: Temporary. Glue damages hair and may cause bacteria to build up on scalp.

Sew-in ( lasts 1 to 3 months)

This technique is the most popular of all the weaving techniques. Your natural hair is braided in a pattern(either circular or cornrowed to the back), and the weave is sewn on to the braids. You can choose between getting a partial(leaving some of your natural hair out to blend with the weave), or a full (no hair left out)weave. Many women use this technique to grow their hair out, or to give their natural hair a rest from chemicals and heat.

Fusion (6 months)

Fusion(or strand by strand) is the most versatile and most natural looking weave you can get. Strands of bulk hair are glued to strands of natural hair. Anything you do with your own hair, you can do with the fusion since the hair is placed directly onto you own hair. No one will know that you added extensions.

Pros: Most natural looking weaving technique. Does not use tracks.

Cons: Very expensive;starting at around $600. Very time consuming(you'll be at the salon basically all day). Can damage your hair.

Types of Hair

Choosing the right type of hair is very important. Weaving hair comes in many different textures and colors. All weaving hair falls into 2 main categories: Synthetic or Human.

Synthetic

Synthetic hair is made with different types of synthetic fibers. It is much cheaper than human hair and it doesn't last as long. Synthetic hair is more likely to tangle and frizz, and it isn't as free flowing as human hair. If you decide to use synthetic, keep it away from heat. Heat will melt the synthetic fibers, so unless the hair package says otherwise DO NOT USE HEAT.

Human

Human hair is more versatile and can be colored, relaxed, and heated. It is more expensive than synthetic hair, but worth it because you can do more with it. Human hair is better for blending with your natural hair because it comes in different textures. Most human hair comes from places such as Asia and India and are treated to mimic different hair textures. Human hair textures include Yaki(relaxed), Silky(Asian texture), and Kinky(naturally curly).

Caring For Your Weave

Now that you have chosen your hair,and gotten your technique of choice done, you need to know how to care for your weave and make it last. One thing about wearing a weave is that you cannot use the same hair products on your weave that you use on your natural hair.

Women of color tend to have dry hair which means that they tend to use greasy/ oily products on their hair such as oil sheen, hair grease, and pressing creams. These things cannot be used on your weave, even if it is a relaxed texture.

An oily weave will not last long, because it is more likely to tangle and frizz up. Instead use anti-frizz hair products and non-greasy hair products. Wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo and deep conditioner. If wearing a sew in, make sure that the braids underneath the weave get completely dry to prevent bacteria and fungus from growing on the braids.

Blow dry hair on low to medium heat and always use hair product that protect your hair from heat. If doing hair isn't for you, then go to a salon and let a stylist wash and style your hair every 1 to 2 weeks.

These are just the basics that you should know if you decide to get a weave. There are many other weaving techniques out there that I didn't talk about in this article, so if none of these techniques are right for you there may be another one out there that you might like. Also, make sure that you find a stylist that knows what he/she is doing.

Many stylist claim they can do weaves, but don't really have the expertise. Ask around about beauticians in your area, and which ones do the best work. Be prepared to pay a little bit more if you go to a really good stylist since good quality work, like good quality hair, tend to cost more money.

The Politics of Skin Color in Gambian Society And Beyond

A person’s skin colour goes a long way in determining their status in contemporary African society. This sad reality, defined by some as “colorism”, is evident in The Gambia where a man eligible for marriage seeks brides that are very light complexioned and potential brides favor grooms that are not only socially and economically prominent but also easy on the eyes, as far as skin tone is concerned. For all our talk about the evils of racism and inequality in South Africa, Europe and elsewhere, Gambians, like many other African societies, have long succumbed to the fallacy that “lighter is better”.

Gambians clamor to befriend Lebanese and other light-skinned friends as proof of their “standing” in society. They bleach their bodies to look like the glamorous white looking models that are broadcast in the media, thanks to globalization. They pray their kids are born light so that the “advantages” that can be garnered by this characteristic won’t slip away thus leading to their conscious objective in seeking partners who meet their “beauty standards”. It is such foolish self-hate that motivated the legendary and very dark complexioned James Brown to coin the phrase “Say it loud I’m Black and proud!”

Black women are the epitome of beauty and sensuality on Earth and although the lighter ones are also striking in their looks, it is the dark complexioned ones that are absolutely glamorous in their physical properties and who tend to be under-appreciated a lot of the time. In fact, until last month, some historians had steadfastly refused to acknowledge that Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt and lover of Julius Caesar and Mark Anthony, was of African descent. It shows the refusal to give credit where it is due as far as the contribution of Black women to beauty is concerned.

This has had an adverse effect on the self-regard of Gambian women, abroad and at home. They opt for artificial hair weaves instead of braids and what they end up looking like is not an exact representation of true beauty that is comfortable in its own skin. There are some, a small minority that still opt for the dreads, braids and Afros that the more racially progressive women of the 1960s and 70s wore with self-conscious pride. They are the last holdouts in an era where the ladies of our communities feel they cannot define their own physical features on their own terms.

Gambian men also unwittingly contribute to this neurosis. The premier example is the so-called head of state Yahya Jammeh, a very dark-skinned guy, who couldn’t find a pretty enough spouse within his borders but ventured all the way to Morocco to betroth a very light complexioned North African woman. If one where to be a fly on the wall during a conversation between Gambian men on what attributes they would love most in a woman, a lighter complexion would be atop the wish list. Gambian men fantasize about women with mixed ancestry. To them, this is the ultimate “trophy wife”. The wife that is so naturally “gifted” that she does not have to subject her body to the harrowing chemicals that are constantly applied in the process locally known as “Xhesal”.

In the US, there was an outcry by African American groups over a Revlon commercial starring the singer Beyonce Knowles due to the obvious altering of her skin tone to make her look more Caucasian than African American. This protest was led by parents of young children who were rightfully concerned the subliminal message was that Black men and society in general prefer women that looked like the digitally altered pop singer as opposed to someone like Grace Jones. In The Gambia, starting in primary school, rich, light skinned kids tend to hang out with their kind, they date within their social grouping and the exception to the rule is this: if you’re dark-skinned and want to join this exclusive community, you’d better be extremely smart or filthy rich. The maids and watchmen don’t count. They have no choice but to stick around.

Lighter pigmented Gambians tend to be richer than their darker counterparts (exceptions should be made for the Fulani population which as a homogeneous group tends to be fair skinned). They get more favorable treatment in education and at the work place. They tend to be more popular amongst friends. They suffer less from mental health ailments. They are treated with more respect by visiting tourists or dignitaries, especially from Western horizons. The police are more likely to let a fair skinned offender go with a slap on the wrist than a browner culprit. Studies have even shown that in a gathering, lighter complexioned individuals are more likely to have their jokes laughed at than their opposite hued peers. These are not made up facts but rather the conclusion of various studies such as Human Behavior in the Social Environment from an African American Perspective by Letha A. (Lee) See.

The prevalence of such pigmentocracy within Black societies has been referred to as the “Brown bag test” where a person’s color has to be lighter than a brown bag for induction into prestigious sororities, universities, churches and other institutions that carried considerable prestige. In fact, film maker Spike Lee was so disdainful of the practice he satirized it in the 1988 movie “School Daze”. In the religious sphere, lighter complexioned marabouts are given more credit than their blacker colleagues especially if they claim to have some “Arab” ancestry or hail from Mauritania and other environs with a vast North African population.

Staying on the theme of the arts, sub-Saharan Africa’s biggest most popular Nollywood stars are of mixed parentage. They are obviously light skinned and have African women going nuts over them. One is Majid Michel, of Ghanaian and Lebanese Parentage. Another is Ramsay Nouah of Israel and Nigerian descent. And let’s not forget the hugely beloved by the ladies Van Vicker, of Liberian, Ghanaian and Dutch Parentage. There was a time in The Gambia when young girls inspired by hit movies such as “Sholay”, mimicked the traits and behavior of the “white actresses” on the silver screen. Such has been the lack of affirmation for all things really black that it has taken on a sinister role in our self-perception as Gambians and Africans.

Of course, people don’t choose who they are (plastic surgery and other artificial measures notwithstanding) and these view points are not meant as an attack on the fairer-skinned members of our peace loving and tolerant community. Rather, a conscious effort should be made on parents especially those of impressionable girls and boys, that the durable keys to success are high self-esteem, hard work and excellence in academia and play, and a sense of self-respect and duty to the societies that they are members of; not perceptions of “beauty” or skin color. Skin tone politics will always play a role in The Gambia as it does in Cuba, an ally of the APRC regime, which claims equality but practices racism in the allocating of sparse resources. A potent measure that could dilute this blemish on our collective self-perception could be the pointing out of dark-skinned heroes such as Cheihk Amdadou Bamba Mbacke (Khadimu-I Rasul), Martin Luther King Jr., Sojourner Truth and that great liberator of Haiti Toussaint L’Ouverture.

Water is second only to air in importance for life. We can survive many days or even weeks without food, but we can only survive a few days without water. Unfortunately, the body’s need for water and its importance for health are often overlooked.

Approximately 60 to 75 percent of total body weight is water. While most people know that the blood, lymph, urine, sweat and tears are mostly water, they do not realize that the lungs are 90 percent water, the brain is 76 percent and even bones are 25 percent water. It also serves as a cushion and lubricant for our spine and other joints.
Most individuals lose between 10 and 16 cups of water per day. This loss is in sweat, urine, in the air we exhale and via direct evaporation from our skin. During exercise in a warm climate, as much as 8 cups of water can be lost in a single hour.

Water’s Role In Massage
It’s important to keep your body’s fluid balance in check. You hear how vital it is to replenish what is lost during exercise, how the key to a successful workout is to keep well hydrated before, during and after exercising but did you also know that water is also important to drink post-massage?

Drinking water after a workout and/or a massage session is very important for creating balance in a person’s well-being,” says AMTA President Laurel J. Freeman. “The body uses muscle energy to move. The energy used from the muscles produces a byproduct called metabolic waste. There are many types of metabolic wastes, including lactic acid. Water helps the muscles by assisting the body's ability to release and eliminate metabolic waste to restore balance,” she says.

Anna says that massage ‘flushes out’ these metabolic waste products that have been trapped in soft tissues. “This puts the waste products into circulation in the cardiovascular and lymphatic systems where they are filtered and eliminated from the body,” she says. “Drinking lots of water provides the fluid medium for the ‘flushing out’ process. And, of course, drinking lots of water leads to more trips to the bathroom where water and waste products in circulation are eliminated.”
When We Don’t Get Enough
Insufficient water intake results in reduced cell function, which greatly diminishes the body’s ability to heal damaged tissues from injury and maintain optimal health. F. Batmanghelidj, M.D., author of Your Body’s Many Cries For Water, has successfully treated many diagnosed diseases—peptic ulcers, colitis, hypertension, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic back and neck pain, anxiety, depression, chronic fatigue, high cholesterol, asthma, allergies and diabetes—with simply increased and regular intake of water.

According to Batmanghelidj, dry mouth is the last sign of inadequate cellular water. When the thirst signals produced by the body are ignored or are responded to with intake of beverages other than water (i.e., soda, coffee, tea or concentrated fruit juice), eventually the body stops providing the sensation of thirst. It often requires drinking water regularly throughout the day for as long as six to eight months for the normal thirst signals to return, and for people to reacquire a taste for water. It can take up to a year or longer to rehydrate your tissues. The sensation of thirst also diminishes as we age. Therefore, it is very important for the elderly to acquire a “habit” of drinking adequate water to avoid cellular dehydration and subsequent health problems.
Caffeine’s Negative Effects
The loss of body water through urination is greatly increased by the ingestion of caffeinated and alcoholic beverages, as they a diuretic effect. Not only do we lose water, we also lose water-soluble vitamins, such as vitamin C, vitamin B1 (thiamine) and other B complex vitamins. There also is increased excretion of calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, chloride and zinc.

This loss can be made up by a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, since they can supply about 4 cups of water per day. But even with a diet high in fruits and vegetables, it is still necessary to drink an additional 6 to 8 cups of water per day to supply enough water to meet the body’s daily needs. For every caffeinated or alcoholic beverage you drink, you need to add an additional glass of pure water.

High intakes of caffeine have been linked to anxiety, insomnia, elevated blood pressure, heart palpitations, headaches, fibrocystic breast disease, diarrhea, increased stomach acidity and ulcers, birth defects and miscarriages. Long-term use of caffeine will cause overworked and weakened adrenals, which may lead to depression and chronic fatigue.

Tolerance for caffeine varies greatly. Some individuals can tolerate as much as 500 milligrams of caffeine per day, equivalent to five or more cups of coffee. Other people cannot tolerate even one cup of green tea, which contains approximately 35 milligrams of caffeine. This intolerance often is due to decreased capacity of the liver to clear caffeine from the body. If any symptoms of excess caffeine consumption are present or pregnancy is planned, caffeine should be eliminated from the diet. Otherwise intake of caffeine should be limited to less than 100 milligrams per day, the equivalent of one cup of coffee. Besides coffee and tea, caffeine is present in soda, chocolate, aspirin and other drugs, such as Fiorinal, Vivarin, NoDoz and Dexatrim.
Drink Up
There have been reports of people suffering from water intoxication, where too much water is consumed and it results in coma, or even death.

Technically, it is possible to drink too much water. However, according to the American Dietetic Association, the bigger concern is not consuming enough fluids.

Most people need 8 to 12 cups of water daily—from drinking water, other beverages and water in solid foods. And since certain medications, high-fiber intake and age can further boost your need for water, it’s more important to worry about getting enough high-quality H2O, than worrying about getting too much.

In today’s edition, we bring you the profile of a woman who today, stands out as a household name in The Gambia, a woman stands out as a prove that women empowerment is indeed on course in The Gambia.

A woman who ranks among the finest citizens Gambia has produced. Her capabilities, skills, high sense of discipline and strategic initiatives put her upright as a role model.
She is no other person than Fatou Saine-Gaye, proprietor of Gaye Njorro Plus Beauty Saloon and School of Hair Dressing & Cosmetology in Brusubi.

Born to the late Momodou Saine and Jankeh Njie on the 11th of August 1974 in Banjul, she started her educational journey at the MethodistPrimary School from 1984 to 1989. She proceeded to the celebrated St. Joseph’s High School from 1989 to 1994 where she obtained her “O” Level Certificate. The same year she enrolled at the Institute of Continuous Education (ICE) up to 1996.

Like any other serious minded woman she proceeded to AT Emile Woolf College from 1996 to 1988, where she obtained an ACCA certificate.
She later proceeded to City Banking England and obtained a certificate in Management Studies before proceeding to the Chartered Institute of Banking.

In 2005 she returned to The Gambia and took up appointment briefly for 8 months with First International Bank (FIB) as Corporate Officer, Marketing, before returning to United Kingdom.
In December 2007 she established the model Gaye Njorro Plus Beauty Saloon. While in the UK Mrs. Gaye worked at British Gas as clerk, London Electricity as Finance Clerk and Sainsbury’s Supermarket as Price Controller. She had also worked in a saloon for seven years.

In February 2009 the down-to-earth Fatou Saine-Gaye established the School of Hair Dressing & Cosmetology. The school has now about 15 students.

Students are not only taken on hair dressing but also on Business and Communication, Health & Safety and First Aid. Her firm is also special in kids styles and treatment, rental of weeding dress and accessories.

Fatou Saine-Gaye has particularly encouraged and entrenched undertakings aimed at extending social and women’s right as well as socio-economic development of Gambian women. This, Mrs. Gaye says brought her more closely to the people Fatou Saine-Gaye is a symbol of success.
In her own words she hates seeing girls roaming about doing nothing. And that is why she established the School of Hair Dressing & Cosmetology for girls to learn skills to earn a living honourably. This underlined her praise and honour as a woman of great mind and ideas, worthy of example.

Mrs. Gaye says she ‘smiles a bit and feels content that she is contributing to women empowerment in her country when she established the School of Hair Dressing & Cosmetology, because it part of her passions that all girls have something to do and not roaming about.
“I think this school will do a lot towards the advancement of women, especially the girls to earn a decent living,” she says. The good books says all things work together is appointed time for everything. She is no doubt Mrs Gaye is an asset to the country.

The Gaye Njorro Plus Beauty Saloon and School of Hair Dressing & Cosmetology are situated at Brusubi (Turntable) Around Access Bank. And girls are encouraged to enrol there for their own advancement.

She has been described by many as a quite humble woman, well respected by all those who know her. She is a woman of dignity, who always shows interest in fellow mankind’s idea. She is visibly one of the most development-oriented women in Gambian society today.

Some of her experiences today served to reinforce her conviction to strive hard and diligently in making a place for herself in the top strata of society, growing in tandem with her flair for quality and excellence in her relentless desire to succeed in the corporate sphere.

As many of her peers readily attest, Fatou Saine-Gaye owns her success to hard work and exemplary commitment to duty.

Her hobbies include reading, cooking watching documentary and historic films, meeting people and travelling and visiting places of interest. She is married with three children.

African hair braiding styles have found their position atop zillion heads, young and old alike. So what is it about hair braiding that fascinates people time and again? Contrary to popular belief, the proliferation of many African hair braiding styles has been due to the fact that they are easy to maintain. A little cumbersome when you are actually getting it done, once executed, it saves you those frequent visits to your salon for the entire month! Neither the length nor the hair texture matters when you braid your hair.

You can choose from a variety of styles to suit your face cut. Low on maintenance, this style can be further enhanced by merging artificial hair with your locks. Easy to manage on a daily basis, hair-braiding styles have gone a step ahead from the traditional cornrow kind.

Feel the urge to plait those tresses? Here’s a look at some of the most common and popular African hair braiding styles:

Cornrows: One of the oldest and most fashionable forms of hair braiding, cornrows have always had a timeless and fashionable appeal. Hair is tightly braided to the scalp in straight or geometric lines. Tension on the strands has to be as evenly balanced as possible. Once done, ensure you give loads of attention to your scalp to have great looking cornrows! Use a hair net when you need to give it a wash and at bedtime, wrap it with a scarf to avoid your hair from getting frizzy. Wide toothed combs, gentle shampoos and protein rich conditioners help to maintain your cornrow hair braids for the longest possible duration.

Micro Braids: These versatile and easy forms of hair braids are also known as the ‘invisible braids’. If you wear your hair long, ensure you do not add a lot of weight to it by micro braiding, which may result in hair breakage. Micro braids allow your hair to be natural as they can also be structured into a neat and professional look. An elegant kind, these are made up of small, delicate braids that can be curled for those willing to go beyond the plain old micro! A cotton cloth can be used to cover the hair braids at night, to absorb any excess oil secretion.

Box braids: When maintained properly, box braids can last for several weeks. These consist of three or four strand braids. One pair has to cross on top of the other. Unlike other styles of braiding, box hair braids require two hair stylists for the entire procedure, which may also be a little time consuming. The wait would definitely be worth it, as with box braids one has to be extremely careful on the amount of tension being placed on your locks. Apart from these one can find ample modified varieties of hair braiding styles: Goddess Braids, Bantu Knots, Fishtail Braids, Tree Braids, Senegalese Twist, African Twist etc., are some of them, to name a few.

At the end of the first nine months of training our students will be sent out on attachment for two months to top beauty salons located across the greater Serakunda area.

At the end of the attachment our stdudents will sit for their fianal exam before graduating and recieving their certificates.

Certificates are awarded by the National Training Authority and The Gayenjorro School of Hairdressing and cosmethology.
